I recently finished reading Unleashing God’s Word in Your Life by John MacArthur and have thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the reasons I picked up this book was because I found myself reading the Bible out of obligation rather than with a true thirst. Half the time while reading, my thoughts were on something else, and I couldn’t even remember what I just read. It was pointless and meaningless.
The book is about understanding God’s Word for what it is, studying it and applying the principles it teaches. This book needs to be read by everyone who wants to take their Christian walk to the next level, moving away from spiritual infancy and moving towards a mature believer.
I especially liked and have applied principles for studying the God’s Word. For instance he recommends spending 30 days in a short book such as 1st John, reading through each day, taking notes and meditating on God’s Word, committing it to memory. Now he doesn’t expect you to memorize the entire book but you will, and should be able to, remember where the key thoughts of the book are located. E.G. Testing the Spirit is in the chapter 4 beginning in verse one, while loving one another is in chapter 3 verse 16. You begin to see repeated words and phrases that help in remembering the concepts the author is writing about. The larger books such as the gospel of John which contains 21 chapters could be broken into 3 sections that are easily read in a day.
This book helped me in other areas such as clarifying the role of the Holy Spirit and what God’s will is for the believer. It’s one of those books that you’ll end up re-reading because it contains valuable information that you will want to revisit and retain.
